Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Defends Glazer Family
Sir Alex Ferguson has backed the controversial owners of Manchester United and insisted he’s had no problems since their takeover in 2005.
The American family have laden the club with huge debts, which have led to fan protests, season ticket boycotts and talk of a takeover by a group of wealthy businessmen called “The Red Knights”.
“They’ve done the job well. I’ve never been refused when I’ve asked for money for a player,” said Ferguson.
“What can I do other than carry on the way we’re doing it and the way I’m allowed to – I’ve no complaints,” he added.
The takeover provoked much criticism from United fans, with many turning their back on Old Trafford to set up FC United of Manchester.
The Red Knights were hailed as the saviour of the fans after registering their interest in buying the club, but plans were put on hold in June and not much has happened since.
Ferguson has defended the financial situation of the club, the circumstances of the takeover and believes the Glazer family have receiver unfair criticism.
“The debt has come through by the club being bought out by an owner. You know full well that when a business is bought it’s usually bought with debt,” he said.
“Because it’s a football club it seems to attract more negative reporting from the media and from the fan but Manchester United Football Club, when it went plc, it was always going to be bought. It was inevitable.
“So when a particular family like the Glazers have bought it, it’s unfair they come in for criticism because anybody could have bought it.”
