Facebook Bows To User Demands To Change Privacy Settings

Facebook has begun to implement the changes its users demanded after its privacy policy was criticized.

The changes mean that all applications installed on a person’s account will have to specify exactly what personal information they will access or utilize.

Facebook‘s privacy settings first came under fire in 2009, and by May 2010 the public feeling had grown so strongly that Facebook acted on requests from users to change the way it makes personal information available.

The US Center for Democracy and Technology said: “It is encouraging to see Facebook act on its stated commitment to providing users with simple but real control over their information. The changes Facebook announced today represent an important and positive step for the company.”

On the Facebook blog, Bret Taylor said: “With this new authorisation process, when you log into an application with your Facebook account, the application will only be able to access the public parts of your profile by default.

“To access the private sections of your profile, the application has to explicitly ask for your permission.”

The site currently houses more than half a million applications with will now be forced to ask for permission to view or use personal information that isn’t public.
