China Defends Internet Censorship
The Chinese government has defended its stance on censoring the internet for its people.
The government released a white paper in which it asserts it has the right to censor the internet within Chinese borders.
The paper also revealed that there are 384 million internet users in China, showing how the usage has grown since it was introduced 16 years ago.
In the paper, some of the reasons why the government chooses to censor the information and websites available to users are revealed.
“Laws and regulations clearly prohibit the spread of information that contains content subverting state power, undermining national unity [or] infringing upon national honour and interests.”
Despite the increasing censorship on China’s internet, dubbed “The Great Firewall of China”, the country still claims to afford its citizens “freedom of speech on the internet.”
“Within Chinese territory the internet is under the jurisdiction of Chinese sovereignty. The internet sovereignty of China should be respected and protected,” the document added.
