Apple Offer Free Bumper Cases To All iPhone 4 Users

Apple are offering a free carry case to everyone who purchased the much maligned iPhone 4.

Steve Jobs made the announcement at a press conference on Friday, in the hopes of bringing to an end the continued criticism of the new iPhone’s signal quality.

The issue relates to the way the phone is held when making a call. Users gripping the phone in a certain way make contact with the metallic strips along the side of the phone and this causes the loss of signal quality.

“We’re not perfect”, said Mr. Jobs at the conference, before adding that reception issues are not exclusive to iPhones and are present in most smartphones.

Unhappy customers can apply for a free case on the Apple website from July 22nd.The cost of this is likely to be around US$180 million.

Apple are also continuing their offer of a full refund within 30 days of purchase to all users who no longer want an iPhone 4.

Though he admitted there were problems with the phone, Mr Jobs believes the problem isn’t as bad as has been portrayed.

“This has been blown so out of proportion, it’s incredible,” he said, before claiming that number of iPhone users that have complained about signal strength is as low as 0.55%.

“Historically for us, this is not a large number. This doesn’t jive with what you read about this problem.”

1.7% of iPhone 4′s have been returned to Apple, which is much lower than the 6% of 3GS models that were returned.

  1. Yes the iPhone 4 has this problem. Mine has it but who really cares? I paid for a bumper with my iPhone the day i got it so it is protected. I would rather have it with a bumper keeping my signal up and protecting my phone then no bumper and no signal. Not getting one is just stupid.

I think it is blown up by the media and i for one will not be returning my iPhone

  2. Sometimes I question the internet and what is posted? Recently it seems to have become an epidemic, recently though it has turned around. What are your thoughts?
